“If I Only Had a Brain….”
Do you remember the phrase, “If I only had a brain”? It sing it quite frequently! They’re from the lips of my favorite Wizard of Oz character, the scarecrow. I remember being so scared when the flying monkeys came on the seen. Then, the brave scarecrow would come to the rescue. I love to watch that move to this day.
Hope you’re not getting tired of my Top Note Die creations. I seem to be looking for characters that haven’t been posted anywhere. If they are, I’m not finding them. So here’s one for your Top Note library. He’s probably the easiest of all so far.
I showed my creation to my husband (he’s my jury) before I put the little bird on his hat to see if he knew what it was. He wasn’t quite sure. I had a button where the bird is now. I quick changed the button out for the little bird and showed him again. Then, he got it. Whew!
When drawing the Faux Stitching, don’t try to be perfect. Crooked lines add to the “Home Spun” feel of the scarecrow. After all, he should look a little tattered and torn. In fact, my husband thinks this little guy is far too happy. Hmmm, I seem to remember the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz as being a very happy fellow even if he did sing “If I only had a brain” all the time.
Ok, where’s that brain?
Thank you for stopping by!

This is easily the cutest scarecrow I have ever seen. I LOVE all your embellishments. You are one talented and clever artist. TFS
Thank you very much. 🙂
What punches did you use to make the hat? This little guy is so dang cute, need to order the stuff and make some up..
Holly, click on the Nuts & Bolts graphic of this post. You’ll get a downloadable PDF of supplies. The hat is also the Top Note die. The bird is from teh Bird Builder punch. Hope that helps.
WOWZA! I just found you today, from Mary Fish's blog… these are adorable! The Wizard of Oz is MY all time favorite movie as well….I try to watch it every year, and I am 62 years old! I remember delivering Girl Scout cookies one Sunday and had to hurry home by 5 PM to watch it! 🙂 Do you have a tutorial some where that tells us how to make all the parts? Like the hat? And for a card, I would assume you place the folded card base slightly below the top cutting line so the card opens? This is great! thanks for sharing!
Great story! I don’t have an official tutorial. However, click on the Nuts & Bolts graphic of this post. You’ll get a downloadable PDF of supplies. Thank you for the great comment Bobbi.
Just love these creations! Am going to follow you now!

Thank you Diane! Comments like this keep me on track.
Rae ~ I , for one, will NEVER get tired of your top note creations. They are AWESOME. You are SO CREATIVE!!
I do have a question. How will you use them? Is this an actual card that opens or simply a card topper?
Thanks again for the inspiration!!
Judy
Judy,
First, thank you! As far as how I will use them. Sometimes, I give them away as cards and sometimes I use them to make cute little favors or the front of a box like Fancy Favor. This one is actually a card. Maybe next time I should show it open as well.
Thanks again for your great comment!
Rae
He's so darling – you did a fantastic job! I only wish I could do the same! 🙂
I love this and plan to make for my decorating this fall. You are so creative, thanks for sharing.
Thank you Nelda. Have fun!
This is so adorable. I like scarecrows and this one is so much fun. Will definately have to dig out my top note die and try this one.
Julia,
Super easy! When you do the hat, take a chunk out of the middle with a 2-1/2″ Circle Punch.
Thank you for the comment and compliment.
