Happy Triskadekaphobia Day!
Happy Triskadekaphobia Day! Are you afraid of the number 13? If so, you’re in good company. I’m not one of those people. In fact, I search out the number thirteen. Am I twisted? Actually if your fear is more specific you could be a paraskevidekatriaphobiac – the fear of Friday the Thirteenth. Now that’s a mouthful!
Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain suffered from the fear of thirteen. Wonder why? Let’s check it out.
Scholars seem to think the fear arose from the Last Supper where thirteen people were present and Christ was crucified the next day, Friday. Sounds reasonable. Some think it has to do with the number twelve being a complete number in many cultures. Another idea comes from what we call today, the Mayan Calendar. Yet another from a Norse Myth and one associated with the Knights Templar. Who knows.
According to some, there is no written evidence of a Friday the 13th superstition. One thing’s for sure, it became more widespread in the 20th century.
On the positive side, many cultures consider the number thirteen lucky. Yay… I’m in good company too! Where’s the black cat? I even had my hair appointment today. See, I’m not afraid!
Thanks for stopping by on one of my favorite days!
